Granted, it was beyond mind-numbingly slow (although it was the norm back then, so it didn't seem too bad, even if we could cook dinner while the modem was still connecting), but you could sign on anytime (the phone line wasn't being used) and just talk to anyone about anything. Perverts and cat fishing aside, it was such an amazing time of connection and communication. It was so magical and impossible, that someone so far away was talking to me in real time.
